Neurodivergent perspectives on traditional social skills principles and approaches

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Presentation summary

Many speech pathologists are striving to be neurodiversity-affirming and seeking training within this area. However, there are limited practical supports to translate theory into practice by evaluating their current resources, practices, and goals. Often Speech Pathologists seek checklists and ‘one size fits all’ approaches which miss the nuances and complexities of affirming practice.

This presentation will aim to support the development of a more thorough understanding of the underlying rationale of neurodiversity affirming practice. By exploring diverse neurodivergent perspectives as to ‘why’ many traditional social skills therapy approaches are not affirming and to consider alternative approaches, attendees will have an increased ability to conceptualize neurodiversity-affirming practice on their own.

Join three neurodivergent speech pathologists to explore contemporary research and reflect on diverse perspectives that challenge underlying assumptions of traditional social skills therapies. For example, consider the role of Theory of Mind within speech pathology practice, and explore alternative theories such as the Double Empathy Problem. Ponder how lived experiences of factors impact the ability to engage in social communication - such as the recognition of emotions (alexithymia), sensory processing differences, monotropism/ flexible thinking and stress management. Finally, cover how neurodiversity-affirming approaches can better align with neurodivergent values and support increased outcomes by facilitating authentic relationships and building self-identity.

Practical applications will be shared through case-studies and attendees will be encouraged to contribute their reflections and own perspectives to discussion points. Presenters will be ready to answer questions from attendees to support increased understanding so they can take neurodiversity-affirming approaches out of the realm of theory and into implementation in the daily practice.
