The Elver Program: Communication disorders in children and young people in NSW OOHC
1:50 PM - 2:05 PMPresentation summary
Objectives – This presentation will identify the presence of communication disorders in CYP in NSW OOHC within the Elver Program.
Methods – Five years of data from private Speech Pathologists, local health services and the Elver Program was retrospectively analysed to quantify the number of CYP in the Elver Program presenting with a communication disorder.
Results – 90% of young people in the Elver Program that were assessed presented with a communication disorder (performance in language, speech, fluency or voice in at least the mild range, -1 to -1.5 standard deviations). The findings were limited by the lack of routine communication skills assessment for CYP in OOHC, with only 52% of in the Elver Program completing a communication assessment. Of those, 44% of assessments were completed in private settings and 42% were completed through the Elver Program.
Conclusions – Most CYP that were assessed presented with communication disorders. However, almost half of the cohort had no documented Speech Pathology assessment. This highlights a gap in service provision for a cohort with known barriers to accessing services. The Elver Program utilises comprehensive Speech Pathology assessment to advocate for CYP in OOHC, support the multidisciplinary team to implement individualised intervention, contribute within a consultative framework and collaborate across agencies to highlight the impact of communication disorders across multiple domains (e.g. functioning, education, mental health, social, welfare).
Key messages
1. The number of communication disorders found in young people in the Elver Program, a NSW OOHC initiative.
2. The value of comprehensive speech pathologist assessment in working with children and young people in OOHC.
3. The use of communication assessment to enhance collaborative practice across agencies in the NSW OOHC setting
