Presentation summary

This presentation will introduce a tertiary institution’s newly adopted approach of embedding Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences within the block model of learning. The aim of this approach is to integrate theory and practice learning simultaneously, supporting students to consolidate and transfer their knowledge and skills into professional practice. This model includes six communication domain specific units. Each unit runs for four weeks and contains workshops, a practical lab and a WIL experience each week. These WIL experiences offer unique opportunities for students to learn through service learning and role emerging models of practice education. Thoughtful development of the WIL experiences consciously aligns with the units’ learning outcomes and assessments. Students are assessed on WIL experiences with the use of an innovative rubric aligned to SPA’s contemporary Professional Standards. This presentation will communicate reflections on the development of this innovative approach, with a plan to assess its impact and efficacy once the first cohort of students have completed their course practice education requirements. Early reflections on this model elucidated by university and practice educators have indicated benefits such as increased relevance of class content and learning activities, supported timely critical reflections on WIL experiences, perceived improved of student confidence and consistent integration of theory and practice within university curricula which facilitates multiple opportunities to consolidate practice-based skills and transference of theory. Reflections on perceived challenges with this model included the condensed timeframe of the units, supporting students to conceptualise alternative models of practice education and the intensive commitment required for student attendance. Whilst this model is still in its infancy and further research is warranted to examine the efficacy and impact on student learning, initial reflections and feedback from university and practice educators indicate that this approach is an exciting and unique method to prepare students for readiness to practice.

Dr Laura Chahda, a qualified Speech Language Pathologist, specialises in adult and elderly populations, focusing on swallowing, communication, and cognitive changes. As a senior clinician in public and private healthcare, she led the adult communication and swallowing disorders student clinic at the University of Melbourne (2019-2021), guiding 70+ students to successful clinical placements. In her senior lecturer and research role at Victoria University, Dr Chahda's award-winning research in death studies and palliative care speech pathology reflects her dedication to advancing the field. She aspires to further her palliative care research and enhance clinical practice experiences for speech pathology students and graduates.
