Exploring an integrated fluency and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention for adults who stutter

11:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Presentation summary

This presentation will describe an integrated fluency and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention for adults who stutter, titled the "fACTS Program". Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychosocial intervention that can be integrated with traditional stuttering treatment strategies to improve psychosocial well-being and assist speech fluency for adults who stutter. The fACTS Program was created by Australian speech pathologists Dr Alice Hart and Associate Professor Janet Beilby, as part of the first author's doctoral studies.

The program was implemented as a clinical trial with 29 adults in Australia and the United States, over eight 60-90 minute intervention sessions where participants learned and practiced ACT and fluency skills concurrently. Intervention was delivered in either individual or group formats, and participants completed the program face-to-face or via telehealth. Results found significant improvements in self-efficacy, psychological flexibility, and psychosocial functioning, as well as reduced stuttered speech frequency. These positive gains were maintained at three- and six-month follow-up. Participants also self-reported significantly improved fluency and positive psychosocial changes as a result of the program.

In conclusion, this presentation will describe the outcomes of a holistic and client-centred intervention that simultaneously addresses the behavioural and psychosocial aspects of stuttering to facilitate positive change for adults who stutter.
