Learn and grow: Collaborating with and empowering educators to improve communication outcomes in their classrooms
10:30 AM - 11:30 AMPresentation summary
We explore the historical barriers to effective Educator collaboration and identify potential solutions to strengthen partnerships with schools to work smarter, not harder.
We discuss the ‘missing link’ that can impact Educators’ abilities to confidently and accurately identify and program for communication difficulties in their classroom. We discuss the benefits of an alternative model of working collaboratively with teachers to provide them with the resources, tools and training to confidently and effectively conduct speech and language screening assessments in education settings. We then introduce the 'Learn and Grow' programme- a collaborative training resource with a focus on empowering and training educators in children services to identify and support children with communication difficulties within their settings, and specifically the preschool setting, the lower primary sector (Early Stage One/Stage One) and the upper primary sectors (Stage 2/Stage 3).
We introduce the development of a hands on, multi-tiered program for speech pathologists to implement with daycare centres, preschools and schools to upskill teachers in identifying and programming for communication difficulties in the classroom.
Key messages
Key message #2: Before Educator training can occur, effective collaboration must be established and maintained with the speech pathologist.
Key Message #3: The value of speech pathologists implementing an education program with teachers to upskill them in identifying and programming for students with communication difficulties in the classrooms.
