A neuro-affirming, holistic approach to assessment and support planning for the Paediatric ADHD population.

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Presentation summary

This presentation will help speech pathologists learn to support children and adolescent ADHDers through the neurodiversity framework.

Its objective is to not only consider the ADHDer in regard to their individual strengths, challenges, and interests, but also to consider supports within the context of their family, school, and wider community. This model integrates capacity-building supports with environmental modifications and accommodations and identifies how speech pathologists can best promote and support advocacy for ADHDers at the societal level.

The information to be presented is rooted in evidence-based practice and is reflective of current knowledge of the ADHD brain’s neurotype. Information will be presented from the lived experience of an ADHD speech pathologist, with over 20 years’ experience, who is also a mum to three multiply neurodivergent children and adolescents, all with a formal diagnosis of ADHD.

The presentation will include opportunities to learn via group and individual discussion, and will result in the attending speech pathologist feeling more confident to plan assessments and ongoing supports for ADHDers in a holistic and neurodiversity-affirming way.

Overall, participants will learn the importance of viewing every ADHD child and adolescent within the context of their individual strengths, challenges, family, community, and larger society.

Key messages

1. The importance of viewing each ADHD child and adolescent holistically, considering their individual strengths and challenges within the broader contexts of family, community and society.
2. An understanding of the neurodiversity framework for assessment and support planning, integrating capacity-building supports paired with environmental modifications and accommodations to address the multifaceted needs of the paediatric ADHD population.
3. The crucial role of speech pathologists in embracing neurodiversity and advocating at the family, community and societal level.

**********

Linda Baker, is a neurodivergent speech pathologist who has worked for over 20 years in the public and private healthcare sectors. She has experience as a clinician, clinical educator, clinical supervisor and a Learning and Professional Development Lead. Linda was awarded the Australian Allied Health Awards Speech Pathologist of the Year in 2022. Linda’s journey into ADHD education and advocacy began when her first child was diagnosed with ADHD. She attempted to navigate the complex terrain of ADHD support, faced with a scarcity of reliable information. Discovering ADHD doesn’t need to be “fixed” but embraced, this ignited the passion to enthusiastically celebrate the strengths and support the challenges of ADHD, offering her experiences to assist others in similar situations. This journey led to her own diagnosis and Linda now proudly identifies as an ADHDer. From this, ADHD Done Differently emerged, which offers a free neuro-affirming parent/carer information/support group. It also conducts research, provides clinical supervision, training, education and downloadable printables for parents/carers, speech pathologists, allied health professionals and educators. Beyond her professional endeavours, Linda finds her greatest joy in being married to the love of her life, Gary and being a mum to three thriving multiply neurodivergent adolescents. Linda’s unwavering commitment is to inspire and support people in embracing neurodiversity.
