Presentation summary

This presentation will describe the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders, a non-profit, global professional association whose mission is to improve the quality of life of individuals with disorders of communication, speech, language, voice, hearing, and swallowing. In addition, panellists who are current members of this association and are also attending the SPA Conference will share their personal perspectives on the value of their membership in the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders

Dr Shulman received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees, both in Speech-Language Pathology, from Bowling Green State University (OH). His Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology is from the State University of New York College at Cortland. He previously served as Dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences and the academic rank of Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ (USA). A Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the Association of Schools of Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) and the National Academies of Practice (NAP), he has made numerous invited presentations to professional groups at international, national, state, and local levels. Dr Shulman is the current President of the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (IALP).

Professor Sharynne McLeod, Ph.D. is a speech pathologist and professor of speech and language acquisition at Charles Sturt University, Australia. She has received Life Membership of Speech Pathology Australia and Honors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is an elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and the Royal Society of New South Wales, and was an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. She is President of the International Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics Association, a Board Certified Member of the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders and served as editor of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology for 9 years. The Australian Newspaper named her Australia’s Research Field Leader in Audiology, Speech and Language Pathology (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022) and Best in the World based on the “quality, volume and impact” of research in the field (2019, 2023).
