What you've always wanted to ask about language intervention with kids: A Q&A panel discussion

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Presentation summary

We all need to ensure our clinical reasoning is based on evidence. This evidence includes both research-based evidence and practice-based evidence. To find this practice-based evidence, speech pathologists are connecting to ask questions and strengthen their professional practice. This often happens in small gatherings (e.g., mentoring) or online. However, rarely do we get to come together as a large group to delve into our practice to address issues and learn from each other. This session is about asking the questions you’ve always wanted answers too!
This 60-minute Q&A panel discussion will focus on language intervention in childhood. The dynamic nature of this panel allows you to ask all your language intervention questions. The panel will include leading Australian researchers and experienced practicing speech pathologists who have a special interest in language intervention. The session will provide a supportive and collaborative place where you can ask questions and gain a broader perspective of the evidence, professional practice, and ethics to inform your own clinical practice.
Before the session, the facilitator will invite questions, which will then be collated and condense. The questions will be provided to the panel in advance to respond. Conference delegates will also be invited to ask live open questions during the panel discussion.
The Q&A panel discussion will be engaging and enlightening. The focus will be on allowing you to reflect and consider how you provide language intervention for children with DLD or a Language Disorder associated with a condition. It will give you an opportunity to hear different viewpoints from clinicians and research in the field, as well as provide a unique setting at the conference to collaborate and engage with the wider speech pathology community. The session will be helpful for anyone who is interested in language intervention – from university students to experienced SLPs.

Key messages

At the end of the Q&A panel attendees will be able to:
1. Reflect on their current clinical practice regarding language intervention.
2. Identify best evidence based practice and practice based evidence principles to apply with children with DLD/Language Disorders.
3. Increase their confidence in providing language intervention to children with DLD/Language Disorders.
