What is the evidence-base for Hanen® programs? A narrative review

Presentation summary

Families are integral to supporting children’s communication. Speech pathologists globally use Hanen® programs when working with families to enhance children’s language and communication skills. A comprehensive narrative review was undertaken to examine peer-reviewed evidence regarding the application and outcomes for Hanen® programs between 1994-2024. Using a PRISMA search strategy, 57 peer reviewed articles examined It Takes Two To Talk™ (35.1%), More Than Words™ (31.6%), Learning Language and Loving™ (14.0%), You Make a Difference® (7.0%), Target Word (7.0%), TalkAbility™ (1.8%) and Teacher Talk™ (1.8%). Studies were reported globally: North America (Canada n=12, USA n= 6), Europe (Spain n = 3, Turkey n = 1, Republic of Ireland n = 5, The Netherlands n = 2) United Kingdom (n=10), Australia (n= 14), Hong-Kong (n =2), and Singapore, and Malaysia each had one. These were analysed for credibility, nature and quality. Credibility: Studies included case-control and cohort studies (26.3%), randomised controlled trials (RCT, 17.5%), qualitative or descriptive studies (17.5%), and non-randomised controlled trials (non-RCT, 10.7%). Nature: Studies addressed efficacy (61.4%), effectiveness (7.0%), perceived effectiveness (22.8%) and the remainder were reviews. Quality: Few studies were identified as high quality using PEDro-P (26.3% of the 19 RCTs and non-RCTs), STROBE (4.3% of the 23 case-control and cohort studies) and COREQ (9.1% of the 11 studies achieved a score of over 80%).While evidence exists for implementing Hanen® programs there is need for more research to examine acceptability and feasibility of intervention, reflecting the real-world needs of diverse clinical contexts

Sarah is a certified Hanen speech pathologist, renowned for her passion to deliver programs that empower caregivers, and inspire other clinicians across Australia. Since completing relevant post graduate degrees alongside her clinical work, she recently commenced a PhD program seeking to develop best practice services for families and children in underserved communities where these services are greatly needed. Sharynne McLeod, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor at Charles Sturt University, Australia specialising in children’s speech. Her transformative research has reframed the profession by foregrounding communication rights and social justice, and by enhancing equitable participation for multilingual children with speech, language and communication needs. She has received Honors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, is a Life Member of Speech Pathology Australia, a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia, and President of the International Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics Association. She has been an Australian Research Council Future Fellow, editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. The Australian Newspaper has named Professor McLeod as Australia’s Research Field Leader in Audiology, Speech and Language Pathology and “best in the world based on the quality, volume and impact of work”.
