Presentation summary

This presentation focuses on the effective integration of telehealth services in school settings to enhance student and school engagement with speech pathology and other disciplines, particularly for rural and remote Australian children. These students often face complex disadvantages and inequities that contribute to communication delays, limited access to essential speech-language pathology services, and poorer outcomes in later life (Jones et al., 2017).

Additionally, by partnering with schools directly we can offer flexible services that include workshops and upskilling opportunities for teachers, who frequently experience heightened pressures in rural and remote settings. This collaborative approach not only empowers educators with effective strategies to support their students but also cultivates a sense of community and shared responsibility for student outcomes.

Lessons from case studies will be presented on collaboration with educators during telehealth speech pathology therapy sessions in a rural NSW school. These lessons will highlight the impact of collaborative practice to enhance engagement for example, educators feeling confident to participate in sessions and provide cues when appropriate.

We will explore the benefits of direct partnerships with schools and educators and how effective this can be via telehealth. These partnerships foster a supportive and enriched learning environment that promotes speech, language, and communication development.

Ultimately, this presentation aims to illustrate how telehealth partnerships with schools can bridge service gaps, empower educators, and maximise engagement with speech pathology services, leading to improved communication skills and academic success for students in underserviced areas.
