Beyond barriers: Empowering Deaf students through evidence-based phonics

10:55 AM - 11:05 AM

**********

Sarah Evans is a speech pathologist with experience across healthcare, community, and educational settings. Her early clinical practice in acute, subacute, and paediatric contexts fostered a strong commitment to person-centred care, advocacy, and equitable access to communication. Now applying her expertise within deaf education, Sarah provides targeted, evidence-based literacy instruction, supporting students with access to sound to develop English through listening and spoken language. Her practice centres on promoting autonomy, confidence, and meaningful participation for deaf learners as bilingual communicators - fluent in Auslan and literate in English. Sarah’s professional philosophy is grounded in the understanding that language access and development are foundational to learning, identity, and lifelong opportunity.
