Mika Shimada is a senior Speech-Language Pathologist with the Queensland Department of Education, working closely with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) service team. She supports DHH students who access the curriculum through Auslan and builds capacity among SLPs and DHH team members to improve educational outcomes. Within a team of experienced SLPs and Teachers of the Deaf, Mika leads projects to develop resources and protocols that are linguistically and culturally appropriate for DHH students who use Auslan as their primary language. Before becoming an SLP, Mika spent nearly a decade in medical research, where an encounter with a Deaf child inspired her to learn Auslan and explore the power of signed communication. Mika is passionate about working with multilingual students, embracing both spoken and signed languages from diverse cultural backgrounds to empower students to be confident communicators and engaged learners.
