Evidence-finding tips for speech pathologists
Presentation summary
Implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) is a key responsibility for speech pathologists, but the process can seem overwhelming for busy practitioners. Challenges may include time constraints, access to external evidence, and knowing where and how to find relevant and accurate information. Formulating, refining, and answering professional practice questions are important steps in EBP.
This practical workshop will discuss the PICO approach to developing questions relevant to speech pathology practice. In small groups, participants will identify, consider, and practice using a range of strategies, resources, and types of evidence to address questions relating to authentic case scenarios.
The workshop will provide opportunities to discuss the implementation of EBP in contemporary speech pathology practice, including with individuals and communities from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
This workshop is relevant to all speech pathologists who want to enhance their use of EBP.
Learning outcomes:
• Increased knowledge of sources of evidence to consider in EBP
• Increased knowledge of the PICO approach to formulating practice-based questions
• Increased knowledge of available resources, tools, and strategies for sourcing evidence to address these questions.
Assumed knowledge: It is recommended that attendees read the 'Evidence-Based Practice for Speech Pathology in Australia' (SPA, 2021) Core Document prior to attending this workshop.
Audience engagement strategies: hands on participation in searching and using online resources, small group discussions, case-based activities.
Implications for practice: A speech pathology workforce that is confident and competent in the implementation of EBP supports the provision of ethical, effective, and high-quality speech pathology services for individuals and communities from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
Keywords: Evidence-based practice, decision-making, search strategies
Submission statement: This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on questions that arise in practice, identify evidence to inform answers to these questions, and consider how they may respond in practice based on this information.
