Presentation summary
o Background and context
Ethical decision making is integral to everyday professional practice and is supported by lifelong learning. Speech pathologists benefit from reflecting on ethical issues within professional contexts and practicing the use of decision-making frameworks, to support provision of respectful and responsive services.
o Learning outcomes
• confidence in application of the SPA 2020 Code of Ethics to practice
• understanding how ethical values, principles and standards support responsive and inclusive practice
• demonstration of professional decision making that respects the diversity of every individual and community.
o Assumed knowledge or experience
An awareness of the SPA 2020 Code of Ethics will support learning and application of decision-making frameworks. The workshop will be relevant to all speech pathologists, including students and those at any stages of their career from early career to those with a range of experience.
o Outline of activities
Participants will take part in:
• case study and scenario discussions using collaborative participation, to develop confidence in providing responsive and inclusive services.
• exploration of ethical issues in contemporary speech pathology practice through application of the 2020 Code of Ethics,
• self-reflection activities to identify opportunities within their own practice to embed ethical values, principles and standards that support responsive and inclusive practice.
o Implications for practice
• familiarity with the 2020 Code of Ethics as applicable to everyday professional practice.
• application of overt and proactive ethical problem solving and decision making
• professional practice is underpinned by ethical principles of autonomy and beneficence, and ethical values of respect and dignity and responsiveness.
