Clinical implementation, step by step. A practical session on how to work through barriers to practice change to support best clinical practice.
Presentation summary
Background and context: Clinical best practice leads to improved client outcomes. However, implementing practice change is really challenging! Health, disability, educational and aged care sectors are complex systems and clinicians have busy caseload demands. Therefore, taking a structured, and strategic evidence-based approach to implementation is crucial.
Learning outcomes: Participants will be able to:
1. Describe clinical implementation frameworks including the Knowledge to Action (KTA) Model
2. Identify key gaps in their practice or practice change opportunities
3. Identify key barriers and enablers and potential behaviour change solutions using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW)
4. Formulate a ‘next steps’ clinical implementation plan
Assumed knowledge or experience: None. This workshop is open to all clinicians/students across all areas of practice (paediatric and adult).Implementation principles are transferable and relevant to all services. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas of practice gaps or areas for practice change, for example based on consideration of how their practice is or is not aligned with a best practice guideline or systemic review.
Outline of activities: Participants will receive workbooks that will enable a step-by-step working through of a practice change opportunity with protected group reflection, discussion and problem-solving time. Activities will include:
• Facilitated discussion on key implementation models/tools to support strategic practice change
• Identification of key targets for practice change with support from facilitator/peers
• Analysis of critical barriers/enablers to practice change through TDF behaviour change surveys and group discussion on the best evidence-based practice change solutions using the BCW.
• Development and presentation of a preliminary ‘next steps’ behaviour change plan.
Implications for practice: Improving implementation will improve client outcomes. Increased knowledge and use of implementation tools can enable clinicians to have frameworks and processes to address challenges associated with best practice clinical implementation.
