Demystifying Research: Practical strategies for increasing Speech Pathologists research engagement in the clinical setting
Presentation summary
Background and context:
Using research evidence to guide clinical practice is integral to delivering quality speech pathology (SP) services. To add to this evidence-base, services are increasingly encouraging SPs working clinically to participate in, and/or lead research to address important clinical questions. Engaging clinicians in research can lead to multiple benefits including improved client care, service delivery and increased staff retention, however many SPs lack confidence and direction in how to best engage. This workshop will provide practical and evidence-based strategies for SPs, managers, and researchers who wish to increase research engagement in the clinical setting themselves and within their service.
Learning outcomes:
1) Learn how to access and apply useful tools for assessing and building research engagement across individual clinicians and speech pathology teams
(2) Understand how to develop a tailored, evidence-informed research development plan for individuals and teams
(3) Learn strategies which have been shown to increase research engagement at individual and team levels including career pathways.
Assumed knowledge/experience: No pre-requisite knowledge is required other than an interest to increase research engagement in the clinical setting.
Outline of activities: A combination of teaching, small group discussion and interactive activities (both written and verbal).
Implication for practice: Participants will receive tools and knowledge to build their own/service’s research engagement in their local setting. Implementation of this knowledge and subsequent increased research engagement has the potential to enhance clinical and service outcomes within their local practice and contribute to research evidence of the profession to further enhance clinical practice more broadly.
Submission statement:
This workshop will encourage SPs to reflect on their current research engagement and desire to address important clinical questions and be empowered to respond by implementing relevant strategies to increase their research engagement. This may spark new knowledge and innovation within their services while respecting the unique context of their setting.
