Presentation summary
Background and context:
Speech Pathology Australia recognises, values and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their cultures, knowledges and languages. The Association has committed to contributing to a future where speech pathology services are centred within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples sovereignty and ways of Seeing, Knowing, Being, Doing and Belonging in order to support culturally responsive and safe practices. As part of this commitment, all Certified Practising Members of Speech Pathology Australia must undertake a minimum of two hours a year of cultural learning
Learning outcomes:
Participants will have increased knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of Seeing, Knowing, Being, Doing and Belonging and how these can be honoured to ensure cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders clients and colleagues. Participants will develop a plan for cultural learning and responsive practice in order to meet the needs of their caseload as well as SPA Certification requirements.
Assumed knowledge or experience:
This workshop is designed to cater for all levels of knowledge and experience.
Outline of activities:
Attendees will participate in a yarning session led by the Senior Advisor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy and Practice supported by other members of the Professional Standards team. Participants will reflect on their own cultural responsiveness and develop a learning plan for cultural learning.
Implications for practice:
Participation in this workshop will support cultural responsiveness and culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities.
