Presentation summary
o Background and Context
The NDIS eligibility guidelines require that NDIS participants have a disability caused by a permanent impairment. DLD is not listed as a condition that is likely to meet the disability requirements when applying to the NDIS. How can SLPs work within an interdisciplinary framework to provide evidence that clients with DLD have an impairment that is likely to be permanent?
o Learning Outcomes
To gain an understanding of:
• Terminology and key terms related to accessing the NDIS
• Identifying and describing impairment and limitations in participation for young people with DLD
• Key tools for assessing the functional impact of DLD within an interdisciplinary framework
• Effectively reporting evidence of reduced functional capacity for children with DLD that aligns with NDIS criteria
o Assumed knowledge or experience
This workshop supports new graduates and experienced SLPs who are working in the NDIS sector supporting young people with DLD.
o Outline of activities
Audience participation will be facilitated through the following activities:
• Describing impairment and limitations in participation for young people with DLD using the Key Lifespan Indicators outlined by the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Support guidelines
• Exploring key tools used for assessing functional capacity in young people with DLD across disciplines
• Reporting on reduced functional capacity for young people with DLD using the 6 NDIS domains
o Implications for practice
Aligning assessment and report writing practices to fit the guidelines required by the NDIS.
Keywords - NDIS, interdisciplinary, DLD, assessment, impairment, reporting
Submission Statement: This workshop allows an opportunity for SLPs to reflect on the ways in which they have been assessing and reporting on impairment related to DLD and offers the opportunity to adapt their practice to better respond to the needs of young people with DLD seeking access to the NDIS.
