Presentation summary
o Background and context
SLPs are equipped to address the impact of language differences on student learning and assist professionals in making appropriate referrals for further evaluation. We can assist other school professionals in making appropriate referrals include: providing in-services to foster an appreciation of language differences among students that speak non-mainstream dialects of English (Newkirk-Turner & Johnson, 2018) and focusing on appropriate referrals regardless of the dialect variation spoken. These suggestions are in line with Speech Pathology Australia’s position statement on “working in a culturally and linguistically diverse society.”

1. Define disorder within dialect.
2. Identify best practices for assessment and treatment when working with children from diverse backgrounds.
3. Creating a culturally responsive lesson plan for culturally and linguistically diverse children
o Assumed knowledge or experience
The purpose of this session is to discuss how culture has an impact on both the assessment and treatment process. We will first start by discussing how to identify a disorder within dialect during the assessment process by utilizing teacher ratings as part of the screening process. We will discuss the assessment process and creating culturally responsive treatment.

o Implications for practice
The presentation will also focus on best practices for assessment and treatment when working with children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This includes working with clients that are multilingual, bidialectical, and being able to identify clients that have a “disorder within a dialect.”
